Types of Ankle Sprains

Spraining an ankle is a common injury that results from overstretching one or more ligaments that helps to hold the ankle joint together. Signs of an ankle sprain are pain, swelling, and bruising. There are three main types of ankle sprains. A grade 1 sprain is the least serious injury. The ligaments are stretched, but not torn, and the joint remains stable. A grade 2 sprain is more severe and painful, and may indicate that more than one ligament has partially torn. This causes the ankle joint to become less stable, and bearing weight is more difficult. With a grade 3 sprain, more than one ligament is torn, and ankle movement is impossible. If you have this type of sprain, seeking immediate medical attention is imperative. Ignoring an ankle sprain can be permanently damaging to the joint. For that reason, if you believe you may have sprained an ankle, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for an evaluation and treatment.

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact Barry P. Weinstein, DPM from Bellaire Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains are the result of a tear in the ligaments within the ankle. These injuries may happen when you make a rapid shifting movement while your foot is planted. A less common way to sprain your ankle is when your ankle rolls inward while your foot turns outward.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Pain at the sight of the tear
  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Bellaire and Houston, TX . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Bunions May Cause Toe Pain

A bunion is a bony protrusion that forms on the side of the big toe and may cause toe pain. The pain may come from the joints in the big toe as the bunion pushes it out of alignment. The big toe may be swollen, red, and stiff, and may worsen until medical attention is received. This condition is caused by wearing shoes that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. A small bump can develop, causing a deformity in the big toe. This toe contributes significantly to walking, rising up on the balls of the feet, and maintaining the body’s balance. Toe pain can cause difficulty in accomplishing these moves, and relief is often sought. This can begin with choosing shoes that fit correctly and wearing custom-made orthotics may help the affected foot to regain alignment. Large bunions may cause the toes to shift toward each other, and the toe pain may become severe. If you have toe pain, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can effectively diagnose a bunion, and offer you treatment to alleviate any toe pain it may cause.

Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact Barry P. Weinstein, DPM of Bellaire Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Causes Toe Pain?

Most severe toe pain is caused due to a sports injury, trauma from dropping something heavy on the toe, or bumping into something rigid. Other problems can develop over time for various reasons.

Toe pain can be caused by one or more ailments. The most common include:

  • Trauma
  • Sports injury
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight
  • Arthritis
  • Gout
  • Corns and calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Blisters
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Sprains
  • Fractures (broken bones)
  • Dislocations

When to See a Podiatrist

  • Severe pain
  • Persistent pain that lasts more than a week
  • Signs of infection
  • Continued swelling
  • Pain that prevents walking

Diagnosis

In many cases the cause of toe pain is obvious, but in others, a podiatrist may want to use more advanced methods to determine the problem. These can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatments for toe pain and injuries vary and may include shoe inserts, padding, taping, medicines, injections, and in some cases, surgery. If you believe that you have broken a toe, please see a podiatrist as soon as possible.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Bellaire and Houston, TX . We offer the newest diagnostic tools and technology to treat your foot and ankle needs.

The Many Types of Heel Pain

The heels of the feet endure a great deal of stress and, therefore, are often open to pain and injury. The most common causes of heel pain are plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, bone spurs, and stress fractures. Heel bursitis, Sever’s disease, and Haglund’s syndrome are other causes that occur less frequently. Pain can be experienced behind the heel, within the bone itself, and under the heel. Simply stepping on a hard rock can cause pain under the heel, but the most common cause is plantar fasciitis. This is an overuse injury to the tissue that runs under the foot and connects the heel to the toes. Chronic plantar fasciitis can also lead to the development of heel spurs on the calcaneus, the main heel bone. Inflammation to the Achilles tendon from overuse is the most frequent cause of pain behind the heel. A podiatrist, a medical doctor who is trained in ailments of the feet and ankles, can diagnose the cause of heel pain by conducting a number of tests. These may include X-rays and electronic imaging tests. If you are suffering from heel pain and are unsure of the cause, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist today.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact Barry P. Weinstein, DPM of Bellaire Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Why Your Feet Might Ache at Night

A person might feel foot pain at night from various causes, including lifestyle factors and medical conditions. Such pain may be dull or throbbing and be felt in the ball of the foot, the heel, the toes, the arches, or the ankles. Aching feet can interfere with sleep, and sleep disturbances can make pain feel worse. Lifestyle factors contributing to foot pain at night include standing for prolonged periods, wearing ill-fitting footwear, or pregnancy. One can get muscle fatigue and suffer cramps or spasms in their feet during pregnancy, and the body processes calcium differently, which can also cause foot cramps. Medical conditions leading to nighttime foot achiness include foot problems like Morton’s neuroma or plantar fasciitis or health conditions such as diabetes. Wearing correctly fitting shoes, getting plenty of hydration, and doing foot stretches can help reduce foot pain at night. If your feet continually hurt you at night, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for an examination, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Osteoarthritis and the Feet

Osteoarthritis, or OA, is a type of arthritis that causes a gradual deterioration of the cartilage in joints. It is common in the feet, and it can lead to joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Osteoarthritis in the feet can happen from injury to the feet and chronic inflammation in a joint that results in wear and tear of the cartilage covering the joint. While there is no cure for OA, there are lifestyle changes and other options that may provide relief. Among them are low-impact exercises to build muscle and strengthen joints, maintaining a healthy body weight, and using orthotics in shoes. Surgery is also a possible treatment option for OA in the feet. Complications can arise from not treating OA, such as the development of bunions, calluses and corns, hallux rigidus, or stiffness in the big toe. If you suffer from osteoarthritis and it is causing pain in your feet or interfering with the quality of your life, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment options that may make you more comfortable.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact Barry P. Weinstein, DPM from Bellaire Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Bellaire and Houston, TX . We offer the newest diagnostic tools and technology to treat your foot and ankle needs.

Causes and Symptoms of Ingrown Toenails

The first sign of an ingrown toenail is pain that continues to get worse. This will be followed by swelling and redness as the nail continues to become embedded into the skin surrounding it. The chief cause of an ingrown toenail is the improper cutting of a toenail, most often on the big toe. In some cases, an ingrown toenail can become infected, especially if the skin around the toenail is cut. This can occur during a pedicure where the skin is accidentally pierced. Wearing shoes with a narrow toe box can make the formation of an ingrown toenail worse and cause more pain. Other common causes of ingrown toenails are improperly fitting shoes, long nails that are rounded, an injury, and genetics. People with diabetes, and those who have fungal infections, are overweight or have toe deformities are further at risk of an ingrown toenail. If an ingrown toenail is causing increased pain or showing signs of infection, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for safe and antiseptic treatment.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Barry P. Weinstein, DPM of Bellaire Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

Itchy feet can come from a variety of causes. It can be extremely uncomfortable and disruptive to one’s life, especially if it is chronic. Itchiness, or pruritis, can be cutaneous, systemic, neuropathic, psychogenic, or a combination of these factors. Cutaneous itchiness means the itch results from a problem on the surface of the skin. Systemic itchiness comes from something going on throughout the body. Neuropathic itching is related to the nerves or nervous system. And psychogenic itchiness arises from a psychological issue. Foot Problems From Wearing High Heels

Wearing high heels can impact your feet negatively. While sometimes, no other style will fit with an outfit, the risks of wearing such shoes should be known and their use should be limited. High heels can cause pain and blisters, but they can also injure the ankles or cause stress fractures, as well as make existing foot problems worse. Wearing high heels can also cause pain in the body beyond the feet. One might practice walking in high heels before they are worn, perform stretching and strengthening foot exercises, and soak the feet to try and ward off foot problems. If you have additional questions or concerns about wearing high heels, or if you have foot pain from wearing them, it is suggested that you talk to a podiatrist and obtain an examination of your feet.

High heels have a history of causing foot and ankle problems. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Barry P. Weinstein, DPM from Bellaire Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Effects of High Heels on the Feet

High heels are popular shoes among women because of their many styles and societal appeal.  Despite this, high heels can still cause many health problems if worn too frequently.

Which Parts of My Body Will Be Affected by High Heels?

  • Ankle Joints
  • Achilles Tendon – May shorten and stiffen with prolonged wear
  • Balls of the Feet
  • Knees – Heels cause the knees to bend constantly, creating stress on them
  • Back – They decrease the spine’s ability to absorb shock, which may lead to back pain.  The vertebrae of the lower back may compress.

What Kinds of Foot Problems Can Develop from Wearing High Heels?

  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Plantar Fasciitis

How Can I Still Wear High Heels and Maintain Foot Health?

If you want to wear high heeled shoes, make sure that you are not wearing them every day, as this will help prevent long term physical problems.  Try wearing thicker heels as opposed to stilettos to distribute weight more evenly across the feet.  Always make sure you are wearing the proper shoes for the right occasion, such as sneakers for exercising.  If you walk to work, try carrying your heels with you and changing into them once you arrive at work.  Adding inserts to your heels can help cushion your feet and absorb shock. Full foot inserts or metatarsal pads are available.
