The medical condition that is known as athlete’s foot can cause the foot to become itchy and uncomfortable. It typically affects the skin between the toes and the bottom of the feet. It is caused by a fungus that lives and thrives in moist and warm environments. These can include wearing socks and shoes that are wet, public swimming pools, and communal shower rooms. Patients may find relief when an antifungal powder is used, and this may help to relieve a portion of the itching and swelling that may accompany athlete’s foot. It is beneficial to wear appropriate shoes while in these areas, in addition to alternating shoes which can help them to dry out. If you have symptoms of athletes’ foot, it is suggested that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist, who can offer the best treatment options for you, which may include prescribed medication.

Athlete’s foot is an inconvenient condition that can be easily reduced with the proper treatment. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Barry P. Weinstein, DPM from Bellaire Podiatry.  Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Two Types Of Heel Spurs

Patients who have developed a bone spur are often aware of the pain and discomfort it can cause. Heel spurs that develop on the bottom of the heel is classified as heel spur syndrome. When a bone spur forms at the back of the heel at the point where the Achilles tendon fits into the bone, it is known as insertional Achilles tendonitis. Heel spurs can develop as a result of frequently participating in running and jumping activities that can overstretch the plantar fascia. Limited range of motion can occur with Achilles tendonitis, and it may be more common among patients who are middle-age. If you have pain in your heel, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can diagnose heel spurs, and offer the correct treatment for you.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact Barry P. Weinstein, DPM from Bellaire Podiatry. Our doctor will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

The Basics of Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails can occur in two different ways. Either the edge of the toenail grows into the skin, or the skin grows over the toenail. Signs of ingrown toenails may include swelling and redness on the sides of the toenail, and if infected, pus may drain from the area as well. Ingrown toenails can be caused due to a variety of factors that can include tightly-fitted shoes, thickened toenails, hereditary factors, and abnormally shaped toenails. While experiencing an ingrown toenail may be painful, there are many solutions to help relieve the pain. This can include wearing properly fitting shoes, trimming the toenails straight across and not too short, and by not digging into the sides of the toenail. If the pain persists, or if there is an infection, it is important that you consult with a podiatrist in order to prevent further complications.

Ingrown toenails may initially present themselves as a minor discomfort, but they may progress into an infection in the skin without proper treatment. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Barry P. Weinstein, DPM of Bellaire Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are caused when the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft flesh surrounding it. They often result in redness, swelling, pain, and in some cases, infection. This condition typically affects the big toe and may recur if it is not treated properly.

Causes

  • Improper toenail trimming
  • Genetics
  • Improper shoe fitting
  • Injury from pedicures or nail picking
  • Abnormal gait
  • Poor hygiene

You are more likely to develop an ingrown toenail if you are obese, have diabetes, arthritis, or have any fungal infection in your nails. Additionally, people who have foot or toe deformities are at a higher risk of developing an ingrown toenail.

Symptoms

Some symptoms of ingrown toenails are redness, swelling, and pain. In rare cases, there may be a yellowish drainage coming from the nail.

Treatment

Ignoring an ingrown toenail can have serious complications. Infections of the nail border can progress to a deeper soft-tissue infection, which can then turn into a bone infection. You should always speak with your podiatrist if you suspect you have an ingrown toenail, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation.

Flat Feet And Finding Comfort

The medical condition that is known as flat feet is defined as an absent arch in the foot. Many people are born with flat feet, and the arch typically develops as the aging process occurs. Patients who have flat feet may experience an achy feeling in the feet, and the feet may feel weak or stiff. Additionally, patients may find their shoes are wearing out quicker than they normally would, and it is beneficial to choose shoes that fit properly. Comfort may be found when insoles are worn inside the shoes, and this may help to provide adequate support that is needed to complete daily activities. If you or your child has flat feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can properly monitor this condition.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Barry P. Weinstein, DPM from Bellaire Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Bellaire and Houston, TX . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Different Types of Foot Pain

There are several areas in the foot that can feel pain due to specific conditions that may have developed. Heel pain may be indicative of plantar fasciitis and heel spurs, and can cause severe discomfort. Toe pain may signify a bunion, hammertoe, or the arthritic condition that is referred to as gout. A nerve condition that is known as Morton’s neuroma may cause pain in the area between the third and fourth toes, and can be caused by wearing shoes that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. If you are afflicted with any type of foot pain, it is strongly advised that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can diagnose and treat various foot and ankle disorders.
