Many adults complain of plantar fasciitis, which is a painful condition caused by inflammation of the band of tissue that runs from the heel to the toes. This can also be found in children, especially those who participate in sports that involve a lot of running and jumping. Dancers, runners, and basketball players may be more susceptible because the plantar fascia absorbs the pounding of every impact with the floor or ground. This results in pain at the bottom of the heel, typically a result of repetitive use. The pain generally worsens after activity and increases as the day goes on. The heel may be particularly painful in the morning but may lessen after stretching or walking. Plantar fasciitis can become worse from being overweight, wearing footwear that does not provide enough cushioning, tight calf muscles, high arches, and flat feet. Many lumps are temporary and others, such as ulcers brought on by systemic diseases, can develop into serious conditions. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause painful bumps to bloom around joints. Corns, also called clavus, can appear on the toes and feet. The most common place a corn develops is on the side of the pinky toe. A corn is a whitish-yellow hardened patch of dead skin that becomes raised, inflamed, and painful due to repeated exposure to pressure and rubbing. This can happen if shoes are too tight or narrow and rub on the side of the pinky toe, prolonged time spent on the feet, structural problems of the feet or toe bones, or an abnormal gait. Those with diabetes, arthritis, and the elderly are more apt to develop corns. Prevention of corns includes wearing properly fitted shoes, resting feet, keeping feet clean, dry, and moisturized, and trimming toenails regularly. A corn on the pinky toe can be treated at home by soaking the foot in warm water, allowing the corn to soften and lift and/or drying the foot after the soak, and filing it gently with a pumice stone. Medicated corn pads, often containing salicylic acid, can be purchased from drug stores and these provide cushioning of the corn while directly applying medication to dissolve the corn. If these simple home remedies don't help or the corn is unusually painful or infected, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist who can use a properly sterilized surgical blade to shave the dead skin and remove the corn.

Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a foot infection caused by fungus. Athlete’s commonly get this infection because it thrives on warm, damp surfaces like pools, locker rooms, and public showers where athletes are and may walk barefoot, hence Its name athlete’s foot. Children rarely get athlete’s foot, but teens and anyone with sweaty or damp feet are at risk for the infection. This condition can get uncomfortable and present itself as bumps on the feet, cracked, blistered and peeling areas that are often between toes, redness, and scaling on the soles of the feet. Other possible symptoms are cheesy skin between toes that has an unpleasant odor or a rash that spreads to the inside of the foot. It is highly contagious and can be spread to other body parts or other people. To prevent this infection, keep feet as clean and dry as possible, air feet out by not wearing the same shoes all the time, wear foot coverings in public areas, and do not share towels or footwear. Check that the front of the shoe is wider than the heel, and avoid shoes with pointy toes or high heels. Shoes with non-slip soles are thought to be safer, as are those that tie, rather than slip on. Stiff outer parts on shoes may be too constrictive. Continue to check the fit of the shoes frequently, and be prepared to buy larger ones as needed to ensure proper growth and development.
